This passage, specific to the Gospel of Luke, is the first action of which Jesus takes the initiative and already everything is said about his identity and his ministry. From the outset he speaks of God as his Father. He will call it this for the last time on the cross (23.46). “The anguish” (v.48) of disappearance runs through the story. That of Jesus as a child. And also already, that of his passion. As evidenced by certain formulas used. The “three days” when the child Jesus disappeared before being found. The “three days” from his death to his resurrection. And again Jesus’ question to his parents “why are you looking for me?” » (v.49), analogous to that of the characters at the tomb: “Why are you looking for him? » (24.5).
Everything has already been said about the future journey of Christ. Including the incomprehension that it will cause. Starting with those close to you. Here his parents who “did not understand what he said to them”. (v.50). It will later be that of the disciples. Then that of the adversaries who will have him crucified. It is also sometimes ours. Let us then remember Mary who also did not understand. Yet she confidently kept “all these things in her heart” (v.51). As she had already done after the adoration of the shepherds (2.10).
May we, beyond our own questions, misunderstandings and doubts, meditate on what has been placed in our memories and in our hearts by the One who always “listens” to us and “questions” us (v.46), us too.
