
The Cross: In our daily lives, we are constantly led to make more or less important choices. When we mention the word choice, what exactly are we talking about?
Laurent Falque: In reality, we often mix choice and decision. Let’s say I want to buy a new pair of shoes. I go into the store, browse the shelves and spot different models that I like, then I call the salesman and point out a pair of shoes that I want to try on – I’ve just made a choice. I go to the checkout to pay for my purchase. The moment I press the green “validate” button on the credit card terminal, that’s where the decision lies. The decision is an act: the implementation of my choice. It’s a commitment. At this moment, I can’t go back, I just paid.
