When film fans talk about the best directors of all time, it is almost inevitable that Steven Spielberg will come up. By Jurassic Park (1993) to Schindler’s List (1993), van Saving Private Ryan (1998) to E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982): Spielberg is a living legend. In his 58th film Disclosure Day (2026) he returns after almost four years of absence, and perhaps better than ever.
Blunt at her very best
In Disclosure Day we follow Dr. Daniel Kellner (Josh O’Connor) and Margaret Fairchild (Emily Blunt) who must find their way to each other and to the truth. O’Connor portrays Kellner strongly and is perfectly cast, but it is Blunt who steals the show. She manages to portray the tense Margaret so convincingly that this could easily be her best work ever. The supporting cast includes Colin Firth, Colman Domingo, Eve Hewson and Wyatt Russell. The casting of Colin Firth and Colman Domingo works out particularly well. Although the two rarely share the screen, their scenes are a joy to watch and these two greats only make each other better.
A blockbuster with brains
The script is by David Koepp, who has already collaborated with Spielberg on, among other things Jurassic Park. Disclosure Day is now their sixth collaboration. The film doesn’t have many spectacular action scenes or big CGI moments – something you might expect from a modern alien blockbuster. Instead, Koepp and Spielberg opt for a different kind of tension. Disclosure Day revolves around the ethical dilemma behind revealing the truth: can people deal with it, what is the role of faith in this and what effect do the aliens have on the characters? But don’t worry, Spielberg didn’t make this a boring philosophical film. There’s more than enough suspense and thrills to keep you on the edge of your seat until the end.
Williams completes it
And then of course there is John Williams’ score. Williams is a true icon and Disclosure Day is his 125th film and his 30th collaboration with Spielberg. After his announced retirement Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023), this chapter seemed closed, but as Williams himself said: “Except for when Steven calls.” His score guides you through the entire film, telling you exactly how you should experience each scene. He knows how to make you feel nostalgic when watching something new. Whether this is truly his last work or not, John Williams is a legendary composer whose work will never be equaled.
Spielberg’s best in twenty years
Disclosure Day is not a perfect film. The CGI is a bit shaky here and there, there are a few clichés and some storylines could have had a little more depth, but this is never distracting. Disclosure Day is a perfect example of Spielberg’s power: getting the best out of everyone around him. From strong acting to an impressive script and a great score, Spielberg manages to convey every detail, right down to the costumes, fantastically. This makes it not only one of the best films of the year, but Spielberg’s best film of the last twenty years.
Disclosure Day can be seen in cinemas from Thursday 11 June 2026.
