EU discusses 6.6 billion euros in aid to Ukraine
The European Union is discussing how it will use 6.6 billion euros, originally intended to reimburse member states having militarily aided Ukraine, after the lifting of a Hungarian veto, EU head of diplomacy Kaja Kallas said on Monday June 8.
Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar, winner of the elections in April, lifted the veto imposed by his predecessor Viktor Orbán on this sum supposed to be used to help Ukraine militarily, within the framework of the European Peace Facility (EPF).
“We have a new Hungarian minister, which also means that we are moving forward with the release of the 6.6 billion” euros, declared Kaja Kallas before the start of a meeting of EU defense ministers in Nicosia.
Strike on a train linking Moscow to Crimea
A Ukrainian drone attack on a train linking Moscow to Simferopol, in Crimea, left one dead and one injured, announced the head of the authorities of the peninsula annexed by Russia in 2014.
“As a result of an enemy drone strike on the locomotive of a passenger train on the Moscow-Simferopol line, the driver was injured and the driver’s assistant was killed, according to preliminary data,” Sergei Aksionov wrote on Telegram, without specifying where the train was at the time of the attack. “The passengers were not injured,” he added.
Support from London, Berlin and Paris to kyiv
The French, German and British leaders gave their support on Sunday to Volodymyr Zelensky’s proposal for a “direct dialogue” between Ukraine and Russia, “with the active participation of the United States and Europe”, following a meeting with the Ukrainian president in London.

Emmanuel Macron, Keir Starmer and Friedrich Merz “welcomed the call launched by President Zelensky for an end to the war, negotiated through diplomatic channels”, after he proposed to Vladimir Putin to meet him directly, in a letter sent on Thursday.
The Russian president responded that he did not see “the point” as long as an agreement to end the war had not been negotiated in advance.
