Martin Scorsese is under fire after speaking out about the use of artificial intelligence in the filmmaking process. The legendary director calls AI “creatively freeing”, which has provoked fierce criticism from Hollywood.
Scorsese sees AI as tool
The 83-year-old Oscar winner has become a consultant at AI company Black Forest Labs, which is developing a tool that allows filmmakers to quickly generate visual storyboards. According to him, AI can be the next step in communicating stories more clearly and efficiently.
Criticism from the film world
Scorcese’s positive attitude leads to sharp criticism from both fans and people from the film industry. Artists and storyboard artists in particular are concerned. Concept artist Karla Ortiz, among others, speaks out:
He throws every single storyboard artist he’s ever worked with under the bus, as he demolishes their livelihoods with models that are likely trained on those story board artist’s same works.
To use his legacy and power for this is just so disgusting.
Animation director Samuel Deats also makes himself heard:
It takes literally seconds for me to storyboard a shot, there is absolutely no reason to need AI built on the stolen work of millions of artists to storyboard your vision, have some damn pride and respect your peers.
Division in Hollywood
The discussion around Scorsese underlines the growing tension about the role of AI in film. While some creators see it as a powerful tool that speeds up the creative process, others fear it threatens jobs and puts pressure on the role of human artists. What is your opinion on the use of AI in the filmmaking process?
