It’s a special weekend for fans of A Different World (1987–1993). The series first appeared on television 39 years ago and today Netflix announces the release date of the new prequel A Different World Sequel Series (2026). In addition to the new images, the streaming service is unveiling more and more promotional material. The countdown has begun!
The famous glasses
The series focuses on Deborah Wayne, the youngest daughter of Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne. For fans of the original, these are familiar names. The pair were among the most popular characters of A Different World and their relationship formed one of the series’ main storylines for many years. Now their daughter is following in their footsteps at Hillman College. The lead role is played by Maleah Joi Moon. What makes the new images extra special is that Deborah is wearing her father’s famous glasses.
A Different World is central
Lead actress Moon will be in Miami this weekend for the American Black Film Festival, where she will speak publicly for the first time about the new series together with showrunner Felicia Pride and executive producer/director Debbie Allen. In addition to Moon as Deborah, several familiar faces from the original series also return. Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison reprise their nostalgic roles as Whitley and Dwayne, Deborah’s parents. Cree Summer (Freddie Brooks) and Darryl M. Bell (Ron Johnson) are also present again. Charnele Brown, Dawnn Lewis, Glynn Turman and Jenifer Lewis also appear in the series. For the new generation of students, Alijah Kai, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall, Kennedi Reece and Chibuikem Uche have also been added to the cast.
