The world of Sherlock Holmes continues to expand. This time the focus is not on the famous detective, but on his iconic arch-enemy James Moriarty. There is a new television series in development at production houses Fremantle and Archery Pictures that gives the infamous villain a modern look.
Criminal mastermind with a double life
In the series, Moriarty is a professor of criminal psychology at Durham University, but secretly runs a criminal network in northern England. When a rival organization threatens his empire, he decides to work with the police as a consultant while hiding his true identity. Together with Yorkshire detective Imogen Burrows, he becomes embroiled in a dangerous game in which he discovers that the greatest threat is closer than expected.
Who will be the next Moriarty?
The lead role has not yet been cast, but expectations are high. James Moriarty has been played by several well-known actors over the years. For many, the most popular version of the character remains that of Andrew Scott in the series Sherlock (2010–2017). In addition, Ralph Fiennes (among others) also playedHolmes and Watson (2018)), Jared Harris (Sherlock Holmes (2009)) and Dónal Finn the iconic villain. Finn can currently be seen as Moriarty in Young Sherlock (2026– ) from Prime Video. Randall Park recently voiced the character in the spin-off Watson (2025–2026).
