Summer series: these nuns who carry the world
At the entrance to the pastoral center of Ugnay-Buhay in Santa Ana, near the fish market, two large dogs lie awake watching, stunned by the heat. Past a colorful fresco depicting the Sierra Madre – the local mountains – as a nurturing mother, Sister Minerva Caampued, 52, greets us in the kitchen of the pastoral center. For almost thirty years, this Franciscan nun has lived in Santa Ana, a remote region on the island of Luzon, in the far north of the Philippines. Here, the temperatures are among the highest in the archipelago, and the inhabitants live almost exclusively from agriculture and fishing.
