
La Croix: What are canonical statuses and why does the sanctuary of Mont-Saint-Michel receive them today?
Don Pierre Doat: Since the code of canon law of 1983, each sanctuary must be endowed with canonical status, but Mont-Saint-Michel did not yet have one, which we decided to remedy. Like association statutes, they define the mission of the sanctuary and the means of achieving it. It is a text of diocesan law, because the sanctuary is diocesan (and not national, like that of Lourdes for example).
