
Mother’s Day in Türkiye, on May 10, gave rise to a controversy which could seem insignificant if it were not revealing of the evils sweeping through the country. An advertisement for vacuum cleaners showed a mother speaking fondly of her offspring, who were later discovered to be, in fact, a dog. “Erosion of values” and “devaluation of the concept of motherhood” according to the Islamo-conservative camp in power, it is, implicitly, the urban bourgeoisie who are on the grill, caught here in the act of destroying the family unit.
