Biblical commentaries
Once again, the Pharisees oppose Jesus. He is an obstacle in their path, in their projects and their desire for enslavement. So scrupulous about the precepts of the law, they are now willing to disobey one of the greatest commandments: “Thou shalt not kill.” » Here they are planning the death of Jesus.
Jesus goes through this hostility. As before in Nazareth: “But he, passing among them, went on his way” (Lk 4:30). Jesus continues his mission: To heal, to care, to announce that the Kingdom is very close. He does not enter into this conflict. He forbids his disciples from talking about him and prevents them from entering into these sterile exchanges. Christ’s mission is to open everywhere and always this passage from death to life, from this world to his Father, in the violence of words and even in the darkness of the Cross.
Jesus only opposes the Pharisees to open a way for the little ones. In this he fulfills the prophecy of Isaiah: he does not seek quarrel, he does not cry… He opens a way and he knows that it is narrow. He knows that the flame of hope is fading. But he does not extinguish this flame, and this narrow path he will take, even in death, to be able to say to the good thief: “Today, with me, you will be in Paradise” (Lk 23, 43)
