
The surge was short-lived. After the provisional entry into force, on May 1, of the trade agreement between the European Union and the Mercosur countries (Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay), which should make it possible to further boost Brazilian imports into Europe, the European Commission is now threatening to ban meat and other Brazilian products of animal origin. At issue: the inability of Brazil, the second largest exporter of meat to the EU, to guarantee the absence of antimicrobial growth drugs in its production chain.
