Patrick Dempsey recently “considered” the idea of running for the US Senate, before ultimately deciding against it.

Democratic candidate Graham Platner officially ended his campaign for Maine’s upcoming election on Wednesday after being accused of sexual misconduct — allegations he has denied.

Against this backdrop, some fans have called for Dempsey — born in Lewiston — to run for a Senate seat.

In a column published this week in the Portland Press Heraldthe actor of Grey’s Anatomy admitted that this support had been “flattering”.

“I love my home state of Maine. I care deeply about the people who live here, and like so many Americans, I am concerned about the direction our country is heading, he wrote. I really thought about it. Not because I was looking for a new career, but because I asked myself an honest question: could I make a real difference? This question led me to another, which seems even more important to me. »

But after careful consideration, Dempsey concluded that he was not the right person for the role.

“After a lot of thought, I realized the answer was no. Not because public service is not honorable — it absolutely is. But because I believe I can contribute more effectively through the life I have already built, declared the sixty-year-old. So no, I am not running for elected office. But I expect something from those who do. Lead with humility. Reveal the truth. Put people before party. »

Dempsey also emphasized that he remains committed to advocating for educational services and funding the Dempsey Center. The star ofEnchanted co-founded this organization in 2008, with the goal of providing personalized and comprehensive oncology care at no cost to patients.

“The Dempsey Center showed me what is possible when people put aside their differences and focus on helping each other. I have seen volunteers, healthcare professionals, small businesses, large corporations, donors and neighbors come together with one goal: to care for people in some of the most difficult times of their lives. No one asks who you voted for before offering support. This is the America I know. This is what I want to see in the leader we send to the Senate,” he added.

The Senate election in Maine is scheduled for November 3.
