“National security cannot become a pretext allowing governments to silence journalists,” says Anne Bocandé, editorial director of RSF, in the preamble to the new report published by the NGO on July 8. It warns of the use of the pretext of national security to constrain the exercise of journalism and restrict press freedom. Far from only concerning dictatorships, it becomes a “model of governance” including in democracy, in the words of Martin Bright, director of the journalism department at the University of Essex who signed the preface to the report.
