With the arrival of Eternals (2021), Marvel seemed to introduce a completely new group of superheroes who would play an important role within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, that turned out completely differently. Despite a production budget of approximately $200 million, the film grossed $402 million worldwide and received mixed reviews from critics and fans alike. Since the cinema release, the Eternals have hardly returned in films and series.
Reasons behind the flop
According to director Chloé Zhao, this was partly because the production had too few restrictions. The Oscar winner said this in an interview with Variety Eternals had “an unlimited amount of money and resources”, which she said sometimes caused the film to lose focus. In addition, Zhao thinks that the delayed theatrical release has not done the film any good. Originally it was supposed to Eternals kort na Avengers: Endgame (2019) were released, but due to the corona pandemic the film was only released much later. Because the story revolves around existential questions about humanity and divine beings, Zhao thinks audiences at the time were less receptive to those themes.
The Eternals return
However, it now appears that Marvel hasn’t forgotten about the Eternals. According to an insider, the Eternals will soon return with an important role within a branch of the MCU. It is not yet known when we will see the heroes again. This may happen in Avengers: Doomsday (2026) of Avengers: Secret Wars (2027).
