One of the most talked about horror films of the past year can be seen on Netflix from today. The Gothic film Nosferatu (2024), directed by Robert Eggers, was released in theaters at the end of last year and impressed with its dark atmosphere and special acting performances. The film was ultimately rewarded with four Oscar nominations.
Authentic in several respects
Nosferatu Set in 1838 Germany, it follows real estate agent Thomas Hutter as he travels to the remote castle of the mysterious Count Orlok to complete a real estate deal. As Hutter becomes increasingly entangled in the Count’s dark plans, his wife Ellen is plagued by terrifying visions. Soon an ancient evil threatens to take over the town of Wisborg.
Behind the scenes, Eggers made special choices. For example, the snow was not added digitally, but made from finely ground frozen potato flakes, a technique that was already used in the 1940s. In addition, filming took place in real medieval castles in Romania and the Czech Republic, which contributes to the oppressive atmosphere for which the film is praised.
The scariest role ever
The leading roles are played by Lily-Rose Depp, Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Willem Dafoe, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Emma Corrin. Skarsgård in particular received much praise for his unrecognizable transformation into Count Orlok. The actor spent weeks working on his voice with an Icelandic opera coach and later described the role as the most terrifying he has ever played.
