
Ireland, which takes over the rotating presidency of the European Union (EU) on July 1, has made security one of its priorities. Although rich, the island is the European state which devotes the lowest share of its GDP to its armed forces, with less than 0.3%, despite a record defense budget of 1.5 billion euros in 2026.
