
From 1,500 to 3,000, this is the number of endogenous languages in Africa – or around a quarter of the languages spoken in the world, according to UNESCO. And almost as many artificial intelligence (AI) models are absent. Thus ChatGPT, used by nearly a billion people each month, only recognizes 10 to 20% of sentences written in Hausa, a language spoken by some 80 million speakers in Nigeria and Niger, according to a study by the American scientific journal Nature published in the summer of 2025.
