Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed responsibility for strikes against Kuwait and Bahrain on Sunday in retaliation for US attacks on Iranian territory, warning that any further aggression would be met with a “relentless response”.

The Guardians “destroyed eight major US military infrastructures at the Ali al-Salem base in Kuwait and at the Fifth Naval Fleet base at Port Salman in Bahrain,” they said in a statement.

“Any enemy aggression, whatever the pretext, even against insignificant targets (…) will receive an implacable response,” added the ideological army of the Islamic Republic.

Iran and the United States accuse each other of violating their fragile ceasefire.

A memorandum of understanding was concluded in mid-June under Pakistan’s mediation with a view to a final agreement intended to bring a lasting end to the war in the Middle East.

The text stipulates in particular that Iran and the United States undertake “not to initiate war or military operations against each other and to refrain from the threat or use of force against each other”.

The US military bombed Iran for the second day in a row on Saturday, in response to an Iranian attack on an oil tanker in the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

The memorandum of understanding calls for Iran to make “arrangements, using its best efforts, to ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels” through the strait.

In their statement, the Guardians emphasize that “arrangements have been made to control traffic in the Strait of Hormuz with the Islamic Republic.” “From now on, non-compliant vessels will be treated with increased firmness,” they added.

On Thursday, the Guardians warned against any crossing of the strait without their authorization and threatened ships that did not comply, after the announcement by Oman, which shares the other shore with Iran, of another route.

The only passage authorized by Iran is in a corridor which runs along its coasts.

Hormuz is a narrow waterway about thirty kilometers wide that separates Iran and Oman.
