
It seems to me that for a long time the heatwave of summer was staring at itself. I think of David Hockney’s famous painting, A Bigger Splash. Painted in 1967 in a large format, solid blocks of color delineate the floor and wall of a villa, the diving board and the rectangle of the swimming pool, a cloudless sky. In the center, Hockney painted the spray of foam raised by the dive. Strange device which recreates the crushing of heat by the size of the canvas and its composition while allowing one to escape from it: under water or as a spectator.
