Several large cities broke absolute temperature records on Monday: it was 40.9°C in Angers (Maine-et-Loire), 42°C in Saintes (Charente-Maritime) and 41.9°C in Bordeaux (Gironde). The highest value of the day was recorded in Châteaumeillant (Cher) with 43.3°C.

“The average temperature across the country is expected to exceed the absolute record of 29.4°C and could reach 30°C in the middle of the week,” warns Météo France.

7:30 a.m. – 54 departments on red alert

Five additional departments – Calvados, Eure, Manche, Seine-Maritime and Somme – switch to the highest alert level defined by Météo France at midday. With a total of 54 departments on heatwave red alert and 35 others in orange, more than 90% of the French population is exposed to extreme and exceptional heat.

Heatwave alerts will be maintained at least until Wednesday for all the departments concerned, the organization indicated in its 6:00 a.m. bulletin on Tuesday, which warns of a possible extension of the red alert from Wednesday for certain departments currently in orange.
