The results of the night
Spain – Saudi Arabia (4-0):
Spain achieved its first success at the 2026 World Cup, correcting Saudi Arabia (4-0) on Sunday in Atlanta and dispelling the doubts born from its inaugural draw against Cape Verde (0-0).
Holder, Lamine Yamal, the 18-year-old Barça prodigy, scored in the 10th minute to launch the “Roja”, before a double from Mikel Oyarzabal (21st, 24th) killed the suspense before the cool break of the first period. An own goal from Hassan Al-Tambakti (49th), following a strike from Marc Cucurella, followed after half-time.
Belgium – Iran (0-0):
Belgium conceded a new draw at the 2026 World Cup, against Iran (0-0) on Sunday in Los Angeles, having finished with ten men after the expulsion of Nathan Ngoy in the 66th minute. The Belgians and the Iranians each have two points after two days in Group G, and will play their qualification for the round of 16 next Saturday, against New Zealand and Egypt respectively.
Uruguay – Cap Vert (2-2):
Cape Verde wrote a new page in its young history in the World Cup by scoring its first goals while holding off (2-2) against Uruguay, which produced another poor performance on Sunday in Miami.
The 64th nation in the Fifa ranking, heroic in this match, opened the scoring with Kevin Pina (21st) and equalized by Hélios Varela (61st) while Maxi Araujo (44th) and Agustin Canobbio (45th + 6) scored for Celeste. Facing Spain in the third match, defeat will be prohibited for Uruguay, currently second in Group H tied with their opponent of the day.
New Zealand – Egypt (3-1):
Egypt, although trailing for an hour, managed to reverse the situation to finally win its very first victory in the World Cup, at the expense of New Zealand (3-1), and thus enter the round of 16 on Sunday in Vancouver.
The Egyptians, who alone take the lead in Group G with 4 points, two better than Belgium and Iran, notably benefited from the awakening of their Pharaoh, Mohamed Salah, author of the goal which put them back in front in the second half.
