
Since 2022, nothing has united the Ukrainian body politic as much as the decision of Polish President Karol Nawrocki to withdraw the title of knighthood of the Order of the “White Eagle” from his Ukrainian counterpart. Volodymyr Zelensky received this high distinction from the Polish state in 2023 for his policy of rapprochement between the two countries. He lost it on Friday June 20 after agreeing to name a special forces unit in honor of the “heroes of the UPA”, the Ukrainian insurgent army of the 1940s, with a controversial heritage.
