Do not be afraid: I am not going to launch into a few lines in an evocation of “perfect joy” according to Francis of Assisi, whose 800th death anniversary we are honoring this year. It is another much more recent death, that of David Hockney, which reminds me of the joy felt, shared and celebrated by visitors to the exhibition dedicated to him last year by the Louis-Vuitton Foundation. More discreet but just as lavish in the joy of looking, the hanging at the Lelong gallery in Paris of some of the British artist’s Norman and nocturnal views (1) encouraged us to carefully preserve the trace of this beneficial contemplation. And how can we forget this return to life and joy exalted on an immense landscape fresco by the same David Hockney, unrolled on the walls of the Orangery just after confinement?
