The perfect family life
The Polygamist is based on the bestseller of the same name by Zimbabwean author Sue Nyathi. The series revolves around Joyce Gomora, a popular social media personality who to the outside world appears to have the perfect family life. However, that carefully constructed facade begins to crumble when her husband’s infidelity comes to light. What follows is an emotional rollercoaster full of secrets, betrayal, confrontations and unexpected choices.
Lots of debate
All 22 episodes of the first season appeared simultaneously on Netflix last week. The series managed to attract the attention of subscribers almost immediately. Within a day the The Polygamist already in the South African top 10 and not much later the production also entered the global top 10. The series is being discussed a lot, especially on social media. Much of the discussion revolves around Jonasi Gomora, played by S’Dumo Mtshali. Viewers are divided about the character and debate whether he is responsible for all the chaos that ensues. The moral choices of other characters also cause discussion. Were they mainly victims of manipulation or did their own decisions also play an important role in their downfall? It is precisely those gray areas that seem to keep many viewers glued to the screen.
