A swimmer was pulled from the water seriously injured on Saturday in Sydney after being bitten by a shark on one of Australia’s busiest beaches, police said.
The victim, aged around 30, is in serious condition after being “bitten by a shark” at Coogee Beach, a popular beach in the south-eastern Australian metropolis.
Four people have died this year in Australia in similar circumstances.
The swimmer suffered serious injuries to her arms and legs and was airlifted to hospital.
The nearby beaches of Clovelly and Bronte have been closed as a precaution.
Scientists believe that increasingly crowded waters warmed by climate change may alter sharks’ migratory routes, increasing the risks of encounters with humans.
