
Netflix has announced that filming for The God of the Woods have officially started in New York. The film adaptation of Liz Moore’s New York Times bestseller is currently filming in the northern part of the state, in both the Hudson River Valley and the Adirondacks Mountains.
Dark family secrets
The God of the Woods is a multi-generational drama series set in the Adirondacks. The series explores the dark secrets of the Van Laar family, tensions between social classes and the mysteries surrounding the disappearance of 13-year-old Barbara Van Laar from her family’s summer camp, in the aftermath of a previous family tragedy that may be related. As the past and present collide, the Van Laars’ wealth and influence crumble, exposing the damaging effects of privilege and abuse of power.
First female detective
Maya Hawke, star out Stranger Things (2016–2025), stars Judy Luptack, the first female detective at the male-dominated Bureau of Criminal Investigation, who investigates the disappearance of a 13-year-old girl from a summer camp. BAFTA winner and Oscar nominee Kerry Condon (Train Dreams (2025)) plays Alice Van Laar, the mother of the missing teenager.
Strong cast
In addition, Damon Gupton (The Drama (2026)), Ella Rubin (The Idea of You (2024)), Susannah Perkins (The Politician (2019–2020)), Benjamin Walker (The Choice (2016)), Nell Fisher (Bookworm (2024)) and Autumn Molina (A Really Haunted Loud House (2023)) a role in the series.
