From today you can watch on Netflix I’m Frankelda (2025), the very first Mexican stop-motion feature film. The film was made by brothers Arturo and Roy Ambritz and share their passion for fantasy horror with this film.
Created monsters to life
Set in Mexico at the end of the 19th century, the story centers on Francisca, a talented writer of dark stories and fantastic characters. But after her mother’s death, she has to live with her strict grandmother, who forces her to follow her rules. But as she grows into a young woman, it becomes clear that her imagination and need to write stories have never been suppressed. And the monsters she created are real. Guided by Herneval, a prince trapped between dreams and nightmares, Francisca finds her voice, Frankelda, and regains her power as a storyteller as she helps Herneval defeat the evil forces that want to destroy his world.

Handmade stop motion animation
I’m Frankelda uses the most detailed and visually stunning stop-motion in a story about empathy, determination and female empowerment. Although the handcrafted look is at the heart of stop motion animation, I’m Frankelda that more really is more: more texture, more decorations, more to see in every image.
