There is in Pope Leo XIV’s first encyclical (Magnifica humanitas) a deeply moving appeal, a final appeal to humanity before it is too late. The dazzling technological and scientific progress poses a dizzying question to us: what are we doing with our humanity? We take the risk of no longer being present to ourselves, to our own condition. For me, this would be the ultimate reason for my Christian commitment: to be present to humanity. The words “God became human” mean that we are all responsible for our humanity.
