Netflix will release a documentary about legendary artist Jean-Michel Basquiat later this year. Jean-Michel Basquiat (2026) will premiere at the 2026 Tribeca Film Festival and is the first documentary about Basquiat to be approved by the artist’s family.
Man behind the myth
Jean-Michel Basquiat will show never-before-seen work, rare archive material and memories of friends and family. In this way, the makers try to tell the true story behind the figure who became world famous. In the early 1980s, Basquiat quickly grew from street artist to icon of the New York art world, but died of an overdose in 1988 at the age of 27.
Direction
The documentary is made by Viridiana Lieberman, who is known as editor of the Oscar-nominated documentary The Perfect Neighbor (2025), and Quinn Wilson. For Wilson, the documentary is her film debut.

Jean-Michel Basquiat (2026)
Jean-Michel Basquiat is the reclaimed story of what was lost in the legacy of a world-famous artist.
Family involved
The involvement of Basquiat’s family is special. The family has fully cooperated with the documentary. Previously published documentaries about the artist have never received this approval.
Soon on Netflix
An exact streaming date of Jean-Michel Basquiat has not yet been announced, but Netflix has announced that the documentary will appear on the platform in 2026.
