Netflix viewers have been particularly impressed by the science fiction film in the past week Mickey 17 (2025). The film, directed by Oscar winner Bong Joon Ho, is currently in fifth place in the Dutch Netflix top 10. The film is also currently doing great internationally on Netflix.
A new version of Mickey
In Mickey 17 stars Robert Pattinson as Mickey Barnes, a man who joins a space colony in the year 2050 on its way to the icy planet Niflheim. He is given a special position as an expendable, a roadside employee who carries out dangerous assignments. Every time Mickey dies during a mission, a new version of him is simply printed, complete with all his memories. When the 17th version of Mickey unexpectedly survives and returns to the spaceship, he discovers that Mickey 18 has already been created. It leads to a bizarre situation where two versions of the same person coexist, something that is absolutely forbidden by the rules.

Identity confusion
Mickey 17 is based on the novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton and combines science fiction with black humor and social criticism, a style for which the South Korean director is now known. Every now and then the director would let Pattinson play scenes without telling him which version of Mickey he was playing. According to Joon Ho, that would contribute to the sense of confusion and identity crisis that is central to the story.
