Disappointing news from Netflix; the streaming giant has halted production on a major historical film starring Denzel Washington. Various entertainment websites report this. According to Variety the decision was said to be related to budget issues.
Historical film
We had a lot to look forward to when it was announced that Denzel Washington would be starring in a brand new Netflix film. That historic production would be about the Carthaginian general Hannibal and had Michael creator Atoine Fuqua at the helm as director. A promising project. But that was to no avail; Netflix has shelved the film.
Budget problems
Several American entertainment websites have reported that Netflix has pulled the plug on the project. According to Variety the project was reportedly halted in pre-production due to budget concerns. For example, the budgets of the historic Netflix Original would have already increased too far. Fuqua and Washington must therefore enter into discussions with Netflix again to find a solution to the budget problems. It is therefore not yet known whether the project will be resumed later.
Cooperation
The Hannibal movie would mark a reunion between Washington and Fuqua. These two have previously worked together on top films such as The Equalizer 3 (2023) and classic Training Day (2001). The historical film, which focuses on Hannibal’s greatest battles against the Roman Republic, would be the sixth collaboration between Fuqua and Washington.
