
This is a very hard blow for German diplomacy. On Wednesday June 3, Berlin failed to win a non-permanent seat on the UN council for the years 2027-2028. Worse, it was eliminated in the first round, with only 104 votes, compared to 134 for Portugal and 131 for Austria, automatically elected. Never in its history has the Federal Republic failed to be elected to a position which it has occupied without interruption, every eight years.
