
In Ireland, behind the facades of traditional red brick houses, there is sometimes another, smaller house hidden in the garden. A shed which was originally used to house the family’s grandparents, hence its nickname “granny flat” (“granny’s studio”). Today, the owners rent it, sometimes illegally, having been unable or unwilling to obtain a building permit.
