Moscow fired 656 drones and 73 missiles overnight
Russia has fired more than 600 drones and dozens of missiles at Ukraine, including ballistic missiles that are more difficult to thwart by anti-aircraft defenses, the Ukrainian air force said on Tuesday (June 2).
The Ukrainian Air Force detected 73 missiles and 656 drones launched by the Russian army, specifying that it had shot down 602 drones and 40 missiles.
Russia carried out “massive strike”
Russia announced that it had carried out a “massive strike” overnight against sites of the military-industrial complex across Ukraine with “high-precision weapons”, including hypersonic missiles.
The attack notably targeted targets in kyiv, Zaporizhia, Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk, as well as energy and transport infrastructure sites linked to the Ukrainian army in other regions of Ukraine, the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.
Nine dead and dozens injured in Ukraine
A major Russian attack on Ukraine left nine dead, including four in the capital kyiv hit by ballistic missiles, Ukrainian authorities reported. “The deaths of four people in the capital have been confirmed,” Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitchko said on Telegram. He also reported 51 injured, including three children, in strikes on several neighborhoods in the city.
“The enemy is attacking with ballistic missiles,” the head of the capital’s military administration, Tymur Tkatchenko, warned earlier on Telegram. After missile explosions rang out, residents rushed to shelters laden with bags and blankets in the streets of kyiv, where a large plume of smoke rose.
In the east of the country in Dnipro, authorities reported five deaths and 25 injured. “The death toll from the Russian attack on Dnipro continues to rise,” said the head of the region’s military administration, Oleksandr Ganja. Ten people were also injured in Kharkiv, also in eastern Ukraine, including a child, Mayor Igor Terekhov described on Telegram. The city was “attacked by 15 drones and two missiles,” he said.
One dead in drone attack in Russia’s Kursk region
A civilian was killed in the Russian region of Kursk, close to the Ukrainian border, in a Ukrainian drone attack, the local governor said. “Today, in the village of Shchekino, Rylsk district, an enemy drone attacked a civilian vehicle,” said Kursk region governor Aleksandr Khinchtein.
“To our immense sorrow, a civilian was killed. Gennady Vasilyevich was 53 years old,” he added on Telegram. Moscow, which bombs Ukraine almost every night, has intensified its attacks during the day in recent months, leading to a response from kyiv which has for its part intensified its strikes, particularly long-distance, against Russia.
