By receiving his Israeli ally Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington on Tuesday July 28, Donald Trump will find himself face to face with the man who convinced him to go to war against Iran on February 28, 2026. The fact is known and documented: it was the Israeli president who persuaded the tenant of the White House to launch operations against Tehran. It was then a question of preventing the Revolutionary Guards from continuing their nuclear race, but also of destabilizing them to the point of forcing them to leave power, for the benefit of new leaders with whom it would be possible to collaborate. However, five months later, this is not the case.
We must hope that in the Oval Office the two men will have the lucidity to realize that they are now waging an aimless war. The offensive appears to be yet another headlong rush intended to keep Benjamin Netanyahu in power in the run-up to risky elections, as well as to cover a new rampant colonization, carried out in southern Lebanon.
In Washington, the conflict with Iran has clearly shown the limits of supposed American omnipotence, by confronting President Trump with his own limits. He affirmed, at the start of the war, that the only moral compass that mattered was his own: he found himself confronted with the wall of reality. Prisoner of his hubris which has continued to fuel his strategic wanderings for months, of which the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is only one example, Donald Trump has caused a global economic shock for which we will pay the price for a long time. In this situation, it is high time to let the diplomats resume negotiations.
