“This action by Ukraine was an absolutely illegal and unjustified act, contrary to the Charter of the United Nations, as well as an act of dangerous adventurism which will certainly not go unanswered from us,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaïl Baghai said at a weekly press briefing.
The consequences of the attack, which left one dead, will be “certainly unpredictable”, he added.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Saturday that kyiv had carried out long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea against ships carrying military equipment involving Iran, underlining the increasingly international dimension of the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Iran claimed the attack caused the ship to explode, killing one sailor and injuring several others. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi threatened to retaliate on Sunday.
