A red streak in the sky of Gironde. On Saturday July 25, the A 400M military aircraft, converted to carry up to 22,000 liters of retardant, made its first drop. This liquid is one of the weapons available to firefighters to fight the fire which has already devoured 42,000 hectares. Unlike water dropped on the flames by canadairs, the retardant is dropped over areas that have not yet been affected by the fire. The objective: to limit its progress. Because plants covered in this way have difficulty catching fire. It can remain effective for several weeks, as long as it is not washed away by rain.
