Tuesday’s meeting between Benjamin Netanyahu and Donald Trump at the White House is crucial for the Israeli Prime Minister, while his voters are scrutinizing his handling of the Iranian issue.

“Mr. Netanyahu is on the verge of an election where he is not only playing his role as prime minister, but there is a non-zero risk that if he ever loses the election, he could go to prison because he is under very serious charges. He plays his skin a little politically,” said Guillaume Lavoie, associate member of the Raoul-Dandurand Chair, in an interview with LCN.

“And a lot of his superpower is his ability to have a positive and influential relationship with the President of the United States,” adds the specialist in international politics.
However, it was the Israeli Prime Minister who convinced Donald Trump to strike Iran starting last February, by promising him a change of regime in Tehran.
From now on, he must repair the broken pots, believes Mr. Lavoie.
“Several of Trump’s advisors said this is pure madness and Trump believed Mr. Netanyahu. The bog in which Trump is somewhat stuck, for many, some will say that it is the fault of Mr. Netanyahu. The American people and the American political class are no longer as much on the side of Israel and Mr. Netanyahu as they were,” he emphasizes.
Benjamin Netanyahu will not only discuss with Donald Trump during his visit to American soil. He will also attend the funeral of Senator Lindsey Graham.
“The death of Mr. Graham is the death of a friend of Trump, but it is also the death […] of a mega ally for Mr. Netanyahu and Israel. So, Mr. Netanyahu is coming to Washington and he is going to do what he does best, that is to say contortion worthy of Cirque du Soleil to succeed in convincing President Trump that the Iranians are not a reliable partner and that their words are worthless,” summarizes Guillaume Lavoie.
