At the same time as the flames, the nightmare is rekindled. “It generates reminiscences, of course,” breathes Christophe Diez, resident of La Teste-de-Buch, a jewel town in the Arcachon basin. In 2022, the police officer narrowly escapes evacuation. The megafires that devour his beloved pond “almost knock on (his) door”. That summer, 32,000 hectares were lost, including nearly 7,000 at La Teste-de-Buch. “We thought we had experienced the horror, we realize today that the worst is to come,” says Christophe Diez.
