
Sharon Maguire, the director of, among others Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001) in Bridget Jones’s Baby (2016), joins forces again with Colin Firth. Maguire has assembled an impressive cast for her new film The Joy of Sex. In addition to Firth, Julianne Moore and Laura Linney also star in the film. Filming started earlier this week in the United Kingdom.
An unconventional relationship
The Joy of Sex is a romantic comedy based on the true story behind the famous 1972 sex education book of the same name. The film centers on Alex Comfort, a British doctor, scientist and author of The Joy of Sex. The film is not so much about the book itself, but more about its origins. According to the makers, the book was created as a result of the unconventional relationship between Comfort’s wife Ruth and her best friend Jane.
The book that changed everything
Since 1972, more than 15 million copies have been produced The Joy of Sex sold. Shortly after release, the book topped the New York Times bestseller list for 70 weeks. With the arrival of this book, Comfort broke the taboos. Finally, sex was discussed openly and in an accessible way. In addition to Firth, Linney and Moore, the rom-com also stars David Tenant, Jason Watkins and Vicky Krips. Even before the recording had started The Joy of Sex already a hit and the distribution rights were sold worldwide.
