Compared to the crowd, Jesus’ disciples enjoy a privileged relationship with Him. It was given to them to “know the mysteries of the kingdom of Heaven”. Because of their unique proximity to Christ, they have the privilege of entering more easily into the understanding of the message that Jesus teaches through the parables. Unlike those who “look without looking and listen without listening,” blessed are their eyes and ears who see in Jesus the establishment of the kingdom of God and hear His Word.
Through baptism, Christ places us in the same relationship that he had with his disciples. Same privilege, same gift of his graces! If we agree to let ourselves be shaped by our relationship with Christ, his Word structures our existence and constitutes a compass. And He reassures us: “To him who has, will be given, and he will have an abundance.” The more we let ourselves be carried by the Lord, the more he manifests his innumerable graces.
The eyes and ears of faith, which otherwise do not change in the reality of everyday events, are a spiritual force for reading our world with hope. They allow us to pierce the signs of the Kingdom. Happy are we if we use it so as not to sink into the despair that daily news tends to bring back!
