The surprise at the cancellation of The Boroughs (2026) still hasn’t disappeared. The science fiction series managed to hold a place in the Netflix top 10 for weeks, received an impressive 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and has also performed excellently, according to the latest Netflix audience report.
Stricter requirements from Netflix
Netflix’s semi-annual What We Watched report, which includes viewing figures from January to June 2026, shows that The Boroughs reached 35th place with 23.1 million views. This makes the production the most recent ongoing fiction series to reach the top 40. It is a special achievement because The Boroughs only came out on May 27 and only had a little over a month to gather viewers. According to Netflix, several factors played a role in the decision not to renew the series. The series, realized by the makers of Stranger Things (2016–2025), had a high production budget thanks to the star cast and many visual effects. For this reason, the minimum number of viewing figures that had to be achieved for renewal was much higher than for other, cheaper productions.

Stop evil
The Boroughs follows a group of elderly residents of a seemingly quiet town, but the group is confronted with a mysterious supernatural threat. As strange events pile up, they discover that they are the only ones who can stop evil. Last month, one of the stars of the series, Geena Davis, said that it was also a surprise to her as a cast member that the series was canceled.
