Although Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022) flopped upon its theatrical release, George Miller’s fantasy film has become a cult favorite in recent years. On social media and forums, the film is even mentioned as one of the most underrated fantasy films of recent years. Now that the film can also be streamed, the production seems to finally be receiving the appreciation that many believe it so deserves.
Three wishes
Three Thousand Years of Longing is about British professor Alithea Binnie, played by Tilda Swinton. During her visit to Istanbul, the British woman buys a mysterious bottle and when she opens it, the ancient djinn appears and offers her three wishes. Before Alithea makes a choice, the djinn takes her through stories from his thousands of years of existence.
Not enough appreciation
Three Thousand Years of Longing premiered at the Cannes Film Festival where the film received high praise and a minutes-long standing ovation. Reviewers were also generally positive about the film. The film achieved a decent score of 71% on Rotten Tomatoes. Unfortunately, the production had difficulty reaching the general public. With a production budget of $60 million, the film only grossed $20.3 million worldwide. According to film enthusiasts, this is completely unjustified.
