New Zealand is an attractive country for the shooting of many major films. In the past, several blockbusters were made in the land of pristine landscapes, including all the Lord of the Rings films, Avatar (2009) in King Kong (2005). Netflix also chose the country as a backdrop for, among other thingsSweet Tooth (2021–2024), but the streaming service has never had its own, locally developed series made. With the new series Queenstown that is now changing.
A wealthy family
Queenstown is an eight-part drama series about a wealthy family that becomes embroiled in a power struggle. Set against the luxurious backdrop of an exclusive New Zealand ski resort, their interests collide with those of the people who work for them. The recordings have already started. The series was created by Chloe Starns and is largely directed by Glendyn Ivin. Also the Roseanne Liang, known for Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024– ), is involved in the project as director. The main roles are played by Frances O’Connor, Rufus Sewell, Alycia Debnam-Carey and Te Kohe Tuhuka.
New Zealand’s move
Queenstown is part of Netflix’s new strategy to increasingly invest in local productions that can appeal to a global audience. After several Australian originals, including Heartbreak High (2022–2026), Apple Cider Vinegar (2025) in Boy Swallows Universe (2024), it is finally New Zealand’s turn.
