Netflix now has a huge range of crime series, so that even the strongest and most-watched titles are quickly forgotten. According to both viewers and critics, that absolutely should not happen to Legends (2026). The six-part British thriller, based on a true undercover operation, is praised for its exciting story, strong acting and realistic approach.
New undercover agents
Legends is set in Great Britain in the early 1990s and is based on a true story about an undercover operation by British Customs. Heroin trafficking is becoming an increasing problem and that is why the authorities decide to deploy not only police officers, but also regular customs officers. They are trained as undercover agents and must infiltrate some of the most dangerous drug organizations in the country. Under a carefully constructed false identity, a so-called legend, they try to gain the trust of criminals.
According to reviewers know Legends to distinguish itself from other crime series because the focus is not necessarily on spectacular shootings or chases. The makers of Legends instead emphasize the psychological pressures of undercover work, the believable characters, and the more personal sacrifices the officers must make.
The real Guy Stanton
Behind the series is Neil Forsyth, who was previously also responsible for the critically acclaimed crime series The Gold (2023–2025). For Legends he spoke extensively with the real undercover agents on whom the characters are based, which, according to him, should make the series not only exciting, but above all human. Lead actor Tom Burke plays customs officer Guy Stanton who decides to leave his safe existence behind to go undercover. His character is based on the real Stanton with whom Forsyth spoke during the preparation of the series. Guy reportedly felt trapped in a predictable life for years and saw the dangerous mission as an opportunity to finally do something meaningful.
