
Chancellor Friedrich Merz pulled out all the stops to welcome President Emmanuel Macron and around ten ministers from their respective countries this Friday, July 17, as part of the traditional Franco-German ministerial council. Augustusburg Castle, near Cologne, a world heritage site, was chosen for its symbolism. It was here that in September 1962 Konrad Adenauer welcomed General de Gaulle for the first official visit to Germany by a French head of state after the Second World War.
