In 2022, a university in the American state of Idaho was shocked by a series of gruesome murders. Four young people in the prime of their lives were killed and the murderer initially remained at large. In a new docuseries about the tragic events, Netflix digs out the bottom stone.

The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare (2026) reconstructs what happened on that November day at the University of Idaho, when Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin were brutally murdered in their dorm. The suspect who was identified ultimately walked free for weeks before an arrest was made and a trial could be started:
Personal touch
Last year, Prime Video also released a docuseries about the college murders, One Night in Idaho: The College Murders (2025). At first glance, the two series have a similar design. The streamer Peacock, which is not accessible in the Netherlands, also made use of it The Idaho Student Murders already a documentary about the murders, which was released just eight days before the Prime Video version. The Hollywood Reporter wrote at the time that the latter series came across significantly better, because the makers had gained better access to the friends and relatives of the victims.
Still ‘One Night in Idaho: The College Murders’ via Prime Video
Netflix’s series may feel redundant in this light, but creator Joe Berlinger (Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey (2024)) thinks differently. College Nightmare is the “definitive” documentary on the tragedy, he says. This version also relies on contributions from relatives and adds previously unseen material from the police services.
