• The Odyssey ⭐⭐
by Christopher Nolan | American-British film, 2:52 a.m. | Peplum
Trojan horse, Cyclops, Circe, suitors of Penelope: this adaptation of Homer’s poem shows Ulysses (Matt Damon) struggling with the burden of his memory. Displaying a mess of scars and a severe post-traumatic syndrome, the hero of this long journey from Troy to the island of Ithaca finds himself in full doubt about the consequences of his actions.
Our opinion: A very personal blockbuster, Christopher Nolan’s new film deploys sublime real settings as well as fantastic old-fashioned special effects. But this adaptation is a little too serious, and grace only crosses this peplum during short scenes, enhanced by the original soundtrack by Ludwig Göransson.

• The dream adventure ⭐⭐⭐
by Valeska Grisebach | German film, 2:41 a.m. | Drama
Said, a Pomak (Muslim Slavic), came to Svilengrad, a border town in Bulgaria, to buy contraband gasoline in order to supplement his income as a mechanic. There he meets Veska by chance, a childhood friend who has become an archaeologist who works on a nearby excavation site. Said’s sudden disappearance will encourage Veska to find out more and find herself caught despite herself in a rivalry between two mafia bosses.
Our opinion: Screened on the last day of competition at the Cannes Film Festival, Valeska Grisebach’s film did not benefit from the media attention it deserved although it was awarded the prestigious Jury Prize during the winners of this 79th edition. If the plot of the story makes it a sort of thriller, the director revisits its form and codes. No dramatic tension or suspense throughout the film but an unexpected scenario which takes us from surprise to surprise.

• The Last Viking ⭐⭐
by Anders Thomas Jensen | Danish film | 1:56 a.m. | Comedy, drama, thriller
After spending fifteen years in prison for a robbery, Anker (Nikolaj Lie Kaas) wants to find the jackpot entrusted to his brother Manfred (Mads Mikkelsen) before being arrested. But this one, who has always been psychologically fragile, has his whims and is convinced of being John Lennon. An improbable journey awaits them…
Our opinion: Anders Thomas Jensen vigorously embraces comedy, family drama, thriller and even fable through an animated film which will bring the film to its conclusion. And successfully combines a certain brutality (to be avoided for sensitive souls) and the tenderness of his gaze. He brings together his two favorite actors, Nikolaj Lie Kaas and Mads Mikkelsen, as moving as he is funny, always impressively accurate in this character on the edge of madness.

• Comet ⭐
by Élie Wajeman | French film, 1h37
A comet flies over Paris and the destinies of its inhabitants, which intertwine in an ensemble film. Stories interwoven around the figure of Anna (Lou Lampros) and the actors who are preparing to play Chekov’s Three Sisters. Their lives, suspended by the irruption of the celestial body, unfold in juxtaposed, sometimes nebulous intrigues.
Our opinion: Touching when it shows the intertwining of individual destinies, Élie Wajeman’s film nevertheless struggles to go beyond the metaphorical figure of the comet to create resonance between the questions of its protagonists and our contemporary challenges.
