The Trump administration has ordered the suspension of most roadside checks carried out by immigration police (ICE) after the death of two people, shot and killed by agents, several American media revealed.

The decision comes from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), on which this agency depends, as reported in particular by New York Times and the Washington Post.
It comes the day after the shooting death of a 26-year-old Colombian in Biddeford, a small town in Maine (north-east), while he was in his vehicle.
The victim, Joan Sebastian Guerrero, worked regularly as a deliveryman and lived with his wife and three-year-old daughter, according to migrant rights associations.

One person was killed in Maine during a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement response on July 13, 2026.

An ICE spokesperson said “the vehicle attempted to flee” and that the agent opened fire “out of fear for the safety of the public.”
Left-wing Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Tuesday called the death an “assassination”.
The previous week, a Mexican national was shot dead in Houston, Texas, at the wheel of his van as he went to work.
Here again, the Department of Homeland Security had claimed that he was trying to escape arrest, a version that witnesses contradicted.
